A Luminous Roof

Luminaire was designed to feel light and airy yet familiar and cozy – both inside and out. Translucent corrugated roofing is used along the north side of a butterfly roof, pitched to catch light throughout the full course of the day. From the oblique soft light of dawn and dusk to the sharp contrasts of midday shadows, the light constantly shifts with the weather and seasons. The rafters of deep eaves impart a rich texture to the exterior.

Wildlife Rain Garden

Located directly across from a fresh water lake, the grounds have been landscaped to create a habitat garden. Rainwater collected by the butterfly roof cascades into a rain garden, populated by water-loving perennials. Throughout the property a total of 63 native, non-invasive, plant species have been used to provide a shifting color palette throughout the year and a variety of flowers and fruits attractive to wildlife.

Light & Sound

The main living space, in addition to generous windows, features a skylight cove running the full length of the room. This not only dramatically animates the room with light during the day, but serves to conceal heating/cooling devices and the fixtures used for lighting the room at night. The ceiling “panels” of gapped planks (backed by acoustic insulation) serve to keep the noise of social gatherings from disrupting guests elsewhere in the house.

Dormer Bathroom

The spirit of al fresco bathing informed the decision to create a butterfly dormer with clerestory windows for its full length. Sky and treetops fill ones view, uncompromised by window treatments, while affording natural air and full privacy.

Social Kitchen

Luminaire, designed as a guesthouse for vacations and holidays, is designed for easy-going and intuitive use. A raised cherry counter used for informal snacks and conversation becomes a buffet service for large family feasts. Glass-front upper cabinets offer visual interest to the kitchen will enabling users to readily find glasses and serveware.

Crafted Stairwell

With natural stained wood being used sparingly in this house, special emphasis was given to the stairs. Each tread is kept as a “pure” rectangle, uncompromised by posts and balusters. Painted risers extend past the treads to receive the balustrade and create visually interesting forms and shadows.
