First Hand Experience

One of the passions AxD founder Ed Barnhart brings to the practice is holistic, hand-on involvement. We renovated this storefront and rear warehouse as our first studio space in Center City Philadelphia. Whenever possible Ed still tries to get his hands dirty on each job!

Intrinsic Beauty

Beauty, we believe, is usually best revealed – not applied. When it came time to add doors to our studio library we kept the raw brick opening left by a prior tenant. Beside the wall we placed sliding “barn” doors – entirely fashioned from wood scraps from various phases of Ed’s career – starting from a slice of his grandmothers’ breadboard which served as his first drafting table.

Express vs. Repress

The poetry of design often lies in deciding what to highlight versus what to conceal. In this case, the entrance to the basement storage area was by necessity from the art gallery. Using a mitered corner on our wood paneling and concealed hardware, visitors found no distractions to their gallery experience.

Inspiration

We look to the associations and analogies that the people, place and purpose bring to each project. Sometimes we’re inspired by food or music or historical events. In this case, creating an art gallery brought forth a feast of artwork by painters including Ellsworth Kelly, Sean Scully, Joseph Albers, and others. The final wood paneling design is an example of how we reflected a portion of those inspirations.
