In contrast to cultural and educational projects which generally focus upon institutional longevity and gravitas, retail projects often aspire to having greater theatricality and of-the-moment currency. The thirteenO1 restaurant + bar project, instead of relying on the conventional materiality of surfaces, essentially utilizes colored LED illumination as the finish. Also, reflecting the fact that retailers typically lease rather than own the space of their enterprise, there is an increased emphasis on gaining greater utility out of “raw” characteristics of the space as leased – exemplified by the Bermuda Tanning Salon and simplified finishes of our own gallery and studio.
